JOB TITLE: Head Coach
REPORTS TO: Activities Director
SUPERVISES: Students within the athletic program
WORKS WITH: Students, school staff, custodial & maintenance staff, teachers, parents, community members, and district administrators
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and prior coaching experience preferred. Must complete all SDHSAA required coursework prior to first activity contact.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Activities Director
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Assumes responsibility for 7-12 program. Supervises assistant coach.
- Assists in selection and evaluation of assistant coach.
- Works with Activities Director in planning schedules.
- Responsible for team fundraising, if desired.
- Works with activities director and transportation director to schedule transportation.
- Holds parent meeting before first official contact.
- Promotes middle school athletic participation.
- Keeps and maintains accurate documentation of student physicals, student and parent consent forms, and other required documentation.
- Provides scores and team information to news media in a timely manner.
- Responsible for all team uniforms and equipment.
- Travels with team to all events.
- Cares for all equipment and maintains inventory.
- Cares for athletes and injured athletes, including follow-up contact with student, parent, and relevant personnel.
- Keeps accurate and up to date information on individual and team scores.
- Prepares award lists and holds annual banquet for athletes and parents.
- Attends all required coaching meetings, state, local, and rules meetings. Operates within the policies of the SDHSAA.
- Prepares and provides student participation list to high school office two days prior to event.
- Works with and maintains a professional relationship with other coaches. Promotes and supports other athletic programs and school activities.
- Work with the Principal and Activities Director to perform duties for the overall good of all athletic programs.
- Ensures proper supervision for all student athletes.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be determined in accordance with the evaluation policy and procedures of the board of education.
